Heritage trees and made ground

The mature fig and paperbark trees in Carey Park on Marine Parade are on the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register. They are Ficus macrophylla and Melaleuca quinquenervia, listed for their link to the original Southport foreshore and sea wall path.

Much of that foreshore is made ground. The old Southport Sea Wall on Marine Parade is now an archaeological site, largely buried by extensive land reclamation along the Southport foreshore, and fill does not hold a machine the way natural soil does.

Development inside the Southport Priority Development Area runs under its own scheme, with the City of Gold Coast as assessment manager. It takes in the Broadwater Parklands and the streets north of Railway Street and south of Queen Street.

Southport questions

Storms, schools and what cannot be touched

A branch came through the roof in the last big storm. What happens first?

In the storm on Christmas Day 2025 a branch came down on the roof of a Southport home and into the kitchen with the skylight, after the wind picked up suddenly. Anything still caught in the canopy is brought down before the mess below it is touched.

Our property backs onto a heritage listed school ground. Does that change things?

It can. Southport State High School on Smith Street is on the Queensland Heritage Register, and its listed landscape includes the sports oval, the perimeter earth embankments and mature shade trees on them, among them various eucalypts. Work on your own side of the boundary is quoted normally; the listed trees are not.

Can the figs at Carey Park be cut back?

Not as a private job. Those trees carry a local heritage listing, so work on them is a matter for the City. What can be quoted is the trees on your own block.
