Nerang National Park is a hilly reserve of dry rainforest and open eucalypt forest, grey gum, blue gum, stringybark and tallowwood, with remnant gallery rainforest in the gullies. Those are the species turning up in the yards backing onto it.
The park and the Nerang State Forest beside it are managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service under the state's Nature Conservation Act and Forestry Act, so a tree on the reserve side of the fence is not a tree anyone can quote.
The blocks along that boundary are steep enough that a lift cannot reach the tree, which is why most removals here come down by rope in sections.

What if a koala is using the tree?
The work waits. The koala is listed as endangered under both Queensland and national law and sits on the Queensland Government's wildlife list for Nerang National Park, with records as recent as March 2025. A habitat tree cannot be cleared while a koala is in it, or in a tree whose crown touches it.
There was smoke over the whole area last season. Should I get my trees checked?
Worth doing. A Queensland Fire Department warning put smoke over Nerang, Gilston and Highland Park down to a hazard reduction burn in Nerang National Park. Fire scars and dead crowns show up in the season afterwards, and a scorched tree can hold on for a year before it drops a limb.
